Preconditions for Joining NDS

These are minimum preconditions for joining NDS based on the list originally flagged at the Ross meeting in December 2000 and subsequently sent to the Computing-Support mailing list on 7/12/2000.

NDS Preconditions:

  1. Novell Client - this will need to be obtained from \\numenor\utas_software\public\novell and loaded onto your machines. It can exist independently of the NDS Tree, and therefore can be installed in advance of any other changes. See Configuring Novell Clients for more information.
  2. Local access control Default logins should function correctly with local "user" level privileges. Administrator rights should be restricted to appropriate members of staff and not issued by default. ZENWorks offers mechanisms whereby lack of local administrator access is not a barrier to installation of ZEN packages.
  3. Use of Drive letters ITS will be reserving the following drive letters for future use in all areas on NDS: P (replacing H), N, R, S, U, Z as detailed in previous emails on this subject. Obviously if you use these letters for the same or similar purpose as we intend them for, then we won't have a problem with it.
  4. NT Domain membership This precondition is under review. Although NDS does not require Windows NT domains, it is likely that our model will include domains and they will be required for larger scale functions. Therefore for consistency (at this stage) we would prefer NT Domain models. On the same front however we would like to rationalise the number of domains, so we can negotiate to merge domains if people are interested.
  5. Anti-virus Software Self updating and appropriately configured anti-virus software.
  6. Compliance with University Security Policy (Computing) Non compliance can risk the NDS security model and is therefore not acceptable.
This is by no means an exhaustive list, but it does represent a minimum that we can work with at this stage. Please contact Alistair Roberts or Patrick Carnuccio directly if you require more detail or would like to find out more about NDS and the Desktop Management Project.
