| Installing
NDS Client software for Windows
Novell NDS Client software can be found on \\numenor\utas_software\public\Novell\
in several pre-configured packages.
The options are as follows:
- nwclient_UTAS.bat - gives full functionality, pre-configured to look
for the UTAS_TREE and set to our recommended defaults. Includes all
Novell tabs, but can be used for NT only by checking the appropriate
box.
- nwclient_UTAS__NT_only.bat - as above but with additional registry
patch to hide Novell tabs, setting workstation temporarily for NT only
logon. Useful for installation on workstations that will not immediately
be joining NDS tree. Can be reset to full NDS functionality by one registry
patch.
- nwclient_W95install.bat - Win9x full installation.
Notes:
- Removal of the client software is done via the Services tab on the
Network Control Panel.
- IPX protocol is NOT required.
- Local administrator rights are required for installation.
- Immediate restart is not required, however the software will not work
until you have restarted.
- You may install at any time, but to add workstations to the UTAS_Tree
you will need to consult with ITS.
There is one performance related issue of which you should be aware, which
may take some explanation for users. The Novell client can have a detrimental
effect on network "browsing" to a remote share, however if the
share is hard mapped to a drive letter there is no problem.
Therefore, instead of going to Start>Run and typing
\\machinename\foldername
users should type
net use x: \\machinename\foldername
then cd to x drive to access the share (where x is the chosen drive letter)
The reason for the performance loss is that the Novell Client is also
searching for a NDS Tree to search, but as at this stage nobody is (yet)
connected to the tree, the client waits some time before timing out.
