Service Catalogue

MIS provide a wide range of Information Technology services to the University.

Major corporate business system support

Most major corporate IT systems have two distinct support requirements; an administration component and a technical support component.

System administration is typically related to tasks such as user management (adding, removing and grouping of users) and providing end-user support. System Administrators are generally employed by the business and not by IT.  IT departments in general feel that this is very important, as being part of the business places this role in a position to best understand the business requirements and the particular IT systems ability to provide required functions.  MIS terms these roles Business System Administrators (BSA’s), and staff within the University in this role make up our primary internal client base for our corporate system support services.

System support is typically related to tasks such as ensuring the system is available when the business requires it, servers running the system are housed appropriately, the system is backed up, has the required level of vendor support if applicable, software and operating patches are applied when required and the system is properly secured.

In large organisations the latter role is typically provided by a central IT department.  At the University of Tasmania, these services are provided by ITR for many of the major corporate systems.

Specific services provided by MIS tend to vary from system to system depending on a number of factors:

  • Is the system an in-house developed system?
  • Is MIS responsible for both system administration and system support (e.g. the University Card System and Electronic Learning Media Services)
  • Level of support required by the BSA.

So although not all services are provided for all major corporate systems, MIS does provide the following:

  • IT Developers to modify and enhance systems
  • Management of 3rd party vendor where system development and support has been outsourced
  • Central issue and enhancement request management
  • Centrally manage, update and store system documentation (knowledge base)
  • Assistance in contract support renewal with 3rd party vendors
  • Custom report development
  • System interface development
  • Coordinating application roadmap development
  • Consulting services to other Sections, Schools and Faculties on best practice application development processes.
