CAPS Connection Request

Every printer or copier that is to be connected to CAPS must have an appropriate form completed and sent to the Service Manager. Copier connection requires consultation with the Service Manager to establish compatibility requirements. These forms are also used for change requests for existing machines.

Copiers charge "per sheet", so charge rates should be expressed as A4 = $0.12, A4 Duplex = $0.16.

Printers charge "per page". A duplex sheet of paper will have two pages, one on each side. So with a printer that provides A4 simplex/duplex the charge rate should be expressed as $0.12/$0.08 which will mean that a simplex sheet of paper will cost $0.12 and a duplex sheet of paper will cost $0.16.

CAPS IDRs

Collective accounts and personal accounts can be recharged via IDR. Information on lodging a CAPS IDR can be found here.

  Known Printing Issues

Authentication:
Authentication is currently handled through LDAP. In the event that the authentication is required to be switched back to POP, the following applies: In the event of postoffice outage, authentication is not possible and printing will abort with an error. Additionally, if the postoffice is under heavy load, such as from a mass-email virus attack, authentication attempts may time out and fail. In such instances, wait a few minutes and try again.

Windows Vista Support:

As of version 7.2 all version of Windows Vista are supported.

Apple Mac OS Support:

Support for various versions of Mac OS is provided via the Pharos Mac print client, however please note the minimum OS requirements in the isntallation document, particularly regarding the requriement of OS 10.5.1 or greater, as the client will not work with a straight 10.5 install.

Linux Support:

Pharos do not currently provide a Linux print client for use with out printing method. Hopefully this situation may change in future, but for the moment Linux is officially not supported.

Hewlett-Packard Printers:
HP Laserjets occasionally produce postscript errors when using the Apple Laserwriter driver. Use the Adobe Generic Postscript driver, or correct HP driver.

Acrobat 8 can cause Service Error 49FF04 on HP printers which forces the printer into an error state which requires a restart to correct. When using HP printers, avoid using Acrobat 8.

Printer RAM:
Users are billed for jobs that printers accept but then cannot print. Make sure your printer has sufficient RAM to handle all jobs. (Recommend 128Mb+)

Date & Time:
If the Date & Time on the client is badly out of whack (eg: 1904) the machine will be unable to Pharos print. This is primarily an issue on Macs with bad internal batteries.
